Eden & Evangelism

Isaiah 62:1-4a: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.” And they shall rebuild the old ruins…

I have a ministered in a few homes for the elderly, visiting the sick and aged and conducting church services. Christian or otherwise and despite the care and attention of staff, these ‘homes’ have often been difficult and unpleasant smelling institutions. Helplessness, hopelessness, boredom and loneliness seemed to be the norm but NO MORE! The 'Eden Alternative'™ is an organisation that seems to be remaking the ...

Sticky Situations Demand a Very Sticky Church

Hebrews 10:23-25: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. NKJV

In Ridley Scott’s epic Movie, ‘Gladiator,’ I am reminded of the scene where General Maximums with his small band of gladiators are placed in the Coliseum before some huge gates. Death, in dread but unseen shape, lies ready behind those gates to come out and not so speedily devour them from the earth. In face of such a growing fear among his men, in double quick time, Maximus speaks to his men saying: “Whatever ...

Waiting With NAMES

Genesis 32:27-28: So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

A month after war broke out with Britain, on July 16, the USS Constitution, encountered a squadron of five British ships off Egg Harbour, New Jersey. The constitution was surrounded and preparing to escape when the wind suddenly died. Out of gunnery range and both sides now dead in the water, for 36 hours the Constitution's crew kept their ship just ahead of the slowly pursuing British by towing the frigate with ...

Judges 11:1-6: Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah. Gilead's wife bore sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, "You shall have no inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman." Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tob; and worthless men banded together with Jephthah and went out raiding with him. It came to pass after a time that the people of Ammon made war against Israel. And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. Then they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon." NKJV.

Yesterday evening I spoke about Operation Jubilee and the disastrous raid on Dieppe carried out in 1942. Though no major object was then achieved by the attacking allies, on orange beech No4 Commando had however, successfully landed in force and destroyed their targets thus providing the only success of the whole operation! It was Simon Fraser, the 17th Lord Lovat, who led this successful attack, providing the ...

From Backside to Flipside

Keyword: PERSEVERANCE by: Rev. Victor Robert Farrell

2 Peter 1:5b-8: add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Along with thousands of others today and in the future, I will be writing of the extraordinary scenes in the Athens 2004 Olympics concerning the young American, Mr Paul Hamm and his amazing achievement of being the first American to win the all round Gymnastics Gold Medal. How he did it, was high drama indeed! I can’t imagine the years of training that go into preparing for such an event. Out of 6 disciplines, ...
